As a teenager, Tinker was one of the top BMX racers in America, appearing on many BMX magazine covers. He was also one of the first BMX riders to start riding skateparks on bikes in the 1970s. He became so famous for his skills that he was called “The King of the Skateparks” back then, landing him on even more magazine covers with his high-flying aerial skills.

In 1986, at the age of 25, Tinker started racing mountain bikes. He soon decided to switch from being a full-time BMX racer to being a pro mountain biker. He quickly rose to the top ranks of our sport and was soon battling such legends as Ned Overend and John Tomac at the biggest mountain bike events in the country.

He was a member of the 1996 Atlanta and 2000 Sydney Olympic teams. Tinker has won national championships in Cross-Country Mountain Biking and 24-Hour Solo races. Tinker medaled in Mountain Bike World Championships (Cross Country) in 1994 and Solo 24 hours in 2003. Tinker won gold at the Pan American Games in 1995 and two UCI World Cup races in 1993 and 1994.

Tinker has continued to race into his 60’s.

Story of the bike

This is Tinker Juarez' 1998 World Championship race bike with the UCI tag #14 still on the top tube.

I received this as frame set from "Napper", who was a Volvo Cannondale mechanic at the time.

The bike was rebuild  with some of the original parts that I have received from Tinker himself.

I changed the handlebars to Azonic and added a Sigma Sport 1100 computer since these photos were taken.

The bike is since 2025 on display at the US Bicycling Hall of Fame in Davis, CA.
